University Hospital, Birmingham

Ah. Time for a political rant, about the NHS. Yes I know hard working nurses blah, blah, blah but this one beggars belief it really does.

My dad needs another double by-pass to survive. No if's, no but's - to survive. He was admitted into the QE Hospital that makes up half of Uni Hospital in Birmingham yesterday (Tuesday 26th April).

His prognosis is such that we may lose him, so you can imagine how we, his family, all felt when we said goodbye before he was admitted. Not goodbye, see you after the opeartion but goodbye forever. Lot's of stiff upper lips and private tears. Dad, of course, was scared rigid as I think he might be allowed to be.

Just had a text - after several hundred pounds worth of tests prior to the operation and with surgeons, anaesthethists and surgery staff along with a theatre they have cancelled the operation.

Why? They don't have spare bed's and an "emergency" has come in. So he will have to wait and go through everythng again.

Apart from the emotional turmoil we and Dad have been through, if you looked up how many times this has happened across the NHS on just one day the costs incurred against losing an ICU bed so having to fight over it must be higher than reducing the bed count surely.

I am white with rage and am so tempted to be slanderous...must resist.
